to provide a seal in the installation's stuffing box to prevent well fluids from entering the atmosphere.
In order to fulfill its functions, the polished rod must be strong enough to carry the full load during the pumping cycle; therefore polished rods typically have diameters 1/4 in larger than the top rod section (see Table 3.19). To provide the necessary seal, the surface of the polished rod is machined to close tolerances and has an extremely smooth surface, frequently provided by a sprayed metal coating. Abrasive action and corrosion by well fluids can damage the high-quality finish and can increase fluid leakage. In such cases, a roughened polished rod is repaired by installing a liner around the damaged rod.
